Play at Quinta Do Lago South Golf Course
The South Course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, this legendary course brought American-style greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. It quickly established itself as a top course on the European Tour and has since become a favourite among European Tour players. The 6,500 metre par 72 course is set amidst umbrella pines, lakes, wildflowers and the peaceful Ria Formosa Natural Park.
The South Course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times and is a world class venue. One of its most memorable moments was in 1989 when Colin Montgomerie shot 24 under par and won by 11 strokes. His record breaking round included a 63.
Despite its championship credentials the South Course is welcoming to golfers of all handicaps. Holes like 8, 15 and 18 are challenging for low handicappers but the course offers something for everyone. Precision off the tee is key as there are doglegs and hazards placed strategically around the course. The front nine which meanders through the parkland is a draw hole and the back nine which winds around the lake is a fade off the tee.
